BY PAUL SCHINDLER | Pope Francis, recently named as the Advocate’s Person of the Year, was “shocked” at the thought of gay and lesbian couples adopting children, according to Bishop Charles Scicluna of Malta.

The Daily Telegraph of London reported that Scicluna, in an interview with the Times of Malta, said, “We discussed many aspects… and when I raised the issue that’s worrying me as a bishop [the right of same-sex couples to adopt] he encouraged me to speak out.” Francis, the bishop told the newspaper, was “shocked” to learn that a civil union bill under consideration in Malta would allow same-sex couples the right to adopt children.

The Telegraph noted that, as Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Francis had opposed adoption by same-sex couples and called gay marriage “the devil’s attack on God’s plan.” At the time Argentina was debating its marriage equality law, Bergoglio urged his fellow bishops to support a civil union alternative, a choice some of the other bishops found unpalatable.

He's "shocked" about children being adopted into a loving home, but not about children being warehoused in orphanages.

Another thing that he really ought to be "shocked" about is child abuse that happened under church auspices.

I am a little suspicious of these type of comments coming from or attributed to other clericals. It is no secret that the conservative elements of the Church aren't happy with this pope and I wouldn't be surprised if there was misinformation campaign afoot to undermine the his popularity by falsifying or exaggerating his reactions or opinions on issues that had become the obsession of his less loving and enlightened predecessors .

I would like to hear the Pope himself say so instead of hearing it come from an very conservative, orthodox religious bigot…….. who is known for his anti-homosexual stance and opinion!

And yes, that means that I consider that what the Maltese Bishop said as a lie!
